Joseph Walsh Studio present Gestures I Sculpture, Magnus II Dining Table, Enignum II Locus Chair, Design Miami/ Basel, Messe Basel New Hall, Tue, 21 Sept 2021 – Sun, 26 Sept 2021
Joseph Walsh Studio’s return to Design Miami/ Basel, will include some of the most ambitious pieces in the studio’s twenty year history. Each piece to be exhibited at Design Miami/ Basel is a vestibule to the studio’s processes, knowledge and material understanding; a masterpiece it’s own right.
The Magnus table shown at Design Miami/ Basel is the second of a series of three unique works. Each piece expanding on the studio’s concept, research and design.
Walsh’s concept for ‘Design at Large’ was to sheathe one of the studio’s iconic functional suites in a monumental sculpture. Pictured is the realised installation, depicting a canopy of cantilevered ash hovering over a sculptural dining table and chairs.
The chair, table and sculpture to be exhibited are a suite of pieces commissioned for a private home. The unique composition marry the studio’s public works and residential commissions; the functional and the avant garde, the micro and macro application of the studio’s technical brilliance. The studio’s installation questions the limits of design in and responding to domestic space, through creating a composition of new challenging cantilevered forms.
Joseph Walsh Studio and workshop were founded by Joseph Walsh in 1999 in County Cork and is where the studio remains, a nexus for craft, design, and material knowledge at a geographical periphery.
Walsh created significant early commissions for various ecclesiastical clients, the Embassy of Japan and the National Gallery of Ireland. Acquisitions by international collections, most recently, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and Chatsworth House.
